Cooking from Home

Hi, everyone!

All of us at the library have been working hard to develop exciting things to do from home. Our Summer Reading Challenge: Imagine Your Story emphasizes unleashing your creativity with your families this summer! One fun way to spend time with the family and keep yourself busy is to experiment with cooking new foods and recipes from home. What you may not know is that the library has tons of great cooking resources for adults and for kids!

Not only do we have great electronic cookbooks and physical cookbooks, we also provide free access to an awesome database called A to Z Food America, opens a new window. This database has great resources that blend educational lessons with the fun of cooking--great for adults and for children learning about different regions and United States history!

You can explore ancient recipes and learn about the history of ingredients. Browse popular dishes by state, region, ethnic group, or time period. Under the Historical tab, you can even find out the favorite foods of past presidents and see vintage advertisements and newspaper clippings from your favorite brands! This database is a great way to learn fun facts and can give you some fun inspiration for trying out new dishes with your family!

One fun idea is to pick one or two days a week where you choose a brand new recipe to try. Perhaps pick a random state and attempt to craft a famous dish popular there, or even make the food of your favorite president! This fun, free resource is available to anyone from home with a library card number. You can find A to Z Food America, opens a new window under our Online Databases, opens a new window!

Need some additional cooking inspiration? Try one of these great cookbooks! Many are available in eBook format, or you can place them on hold for curbside pickup at one of our large branches!
