How many times have you read a story about The Chosen One? How many times have you opened a book and found a prologue about a prophetic child-- the one who is destined to conquer a terrible evil and save the world?
Have you ever wondered about everyone else in the story? What’s happening in the lives of those people in the background who are as average as you and me? These are the people at the forefront of The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. Sure, one of the main characters is worshipped by cats, but we can’t all be average, right?
Mikey is a senior in high school. He wants to go to Prom. He wants to tell his longtime crush how he feels about her. He wants his sister to overcome her battles. He wants his best friend to stop keeping secrets. Mikey also wants to cure his OCD which is getting worse and worse as the school year comes to a close.
But something is going on with the indie kids-- the special ones. People keep dying, strange blue lights keep lighting up the sky, and animals are coming back from the dead. This is all in the background for Mikey. The indie kids don’t bother to tell the rest of the world what is going on. Mikey just hopes that whatever it is ends soon and that the high school doesn’t get blown up. Again.
