aaa

The St. Tammany Parish Library Genealogy Department houses a unique collection of resources for the historical and/or genealogical hobbyists/researcher. The collection consists of books, microfilm, microfiche, maps, and vertical file materials. The collection includes state and local histories, city directories, school yearbooks, and research handbooks and guides. We have thousands of monographs available at the Covington Branch. There are also limited volumes at the Slidell Branch. Many of the books include:

  • basic research guides for novice family hobbyists
  • research guides and sources for ethnic groups
  • census, marriage, family maps, and various records for various states
  • compiled family histories
  • immigration/emigration records
  • military records
  • cemetery records and select cemetery plot maps
  • geographical histories
  • church records including the Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records, South Louisiana and Southwest Louisiana Records by Father Hebert, and the Sacramental Records of the Archdiocese of New Orleans

Vertical file materials contain articles of historical and research topics, brochures, pamphlets, maps, and unique photographs not found in the print collection.

Materials in the collection may be used without restrictions within the reading room. Genealogy materials cannot be checked out. Most of the materials in the collection may be photocopied on public access copiers and scanners.

We are a Family History Library Affiliate and have viewing privileges of digitized materials through Family Search, subject to restrictions on copyright or number of users viewing at the same time.

The Library also has a dedicated librarian, Germaine Butler, who is available to assist patrons with their research. Patrons can contact her at (985) 893-6280 ext. 4006 or email their request to germaine@stpl.us.
