Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee: 1952-2022

The United Kingdom's Royal House of Windsor has for decades been a subject of worldwide fascination. Comprised of the six most recent generations of descendants of Queen Victoria, members of the House of Windsor have held the throne for more than one hundred years, since the early part of the twentieth century.

For more than half of that time, Elizabeth II has reigned as queen. On February 6, 2022, she celebrates her platinum jubilee--70 years on the throne, longer than any other British monarch, and almost 19 years longer than the combined reigns of the four monarchs who immediately preceded her.

Elizabeth's accession to the throne occurred on February 6, 1952, upon the death of her father, King George VI. Over the course of the next 16 months, preparations were made for her coronation, which took place on June 2, 1953. Born on April 21, 1926, Elizabeth was the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York. Her father ascended to the throne as King George VI in 1936 when she was ten years old. His accession was the consequence of the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII, opens a new window, who had reigned for less than a year before giving the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Elizabeth committed her life to the service, opens a new window of the Commonwealth in a radio speech when she was 21, and there are examples of this commitment throughout her life. She joined, opens a new window the women's division of the British Army after her 18th birthday and trained as a mechanic in the final months of World War II. Recent data collected by YouGov, opens a new window indicate that Queen Elizabeth II enjoys a 76% approval rating among Britons, the highest of all members of the royal family.
