Battle of the Books Returns!

by Tanya DiMaggio, Children's Services Coordinator

The St. Tammany Battle of the Books program is an annual inter-library book trivia competition between teams of 5th-8th graders focused on knowledge of 5 pre-selected novels. Students entering 5th-8th grades in the 2018-2019 school year are eligible to join a team. Teams compete in multiple rounds in a Quiz Bowl-style competition. The next St. Tammany Battle of the Books will be held on July 14, 2018. Teams are forming now at the Causeway, Covington, Madisonville, Mandeville, Slidell, and South Slidell Branches.

The Battle is followed by an Award Party. Members of the winning team receive individual trophies and are awarded the official Battle of the Books Championship Trophy for display at the winning Branch Library. Non-scoring awards include Best Sportsmanship, Best Costume, and Best Team Name.

Informational meetings will be offered at all competing branches.

This summer's books are:

Ada's Violin: The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay by Susan Hood- A town built on a landfill. A community in need of hope. A girl with a dream. A man with a vision. An ingenious idea.

Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis- This Newbery Medal winning book is about ten-year-old Bud, a motherless boy living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression, escapes a bad foster home and sets out in search of the man he believes to be his father--the renowned bandleader.

El Deafo by Cece Bell- Going to school and making new friends can be tough. But going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this graphic novel, Cece, after some trouble, is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become "El Deafo, Listener for All."

A Mouse Called Wolf by Dick King-Smith- A mouse with an unusual name shares his musical gift with a widowed concert pianist.

Who Were the Beatles? By Geoff Edgers- A biography of the Beatles, the world's most famous rock band, in the popular “Who Was?” series.
