LYRCA Bookclub at the Slidell Branch

by Jen Martin, Slidell Branch Children's Librarian

Slidell middle schoolers are focusing on the 2018 Louisiana Young Readers Choice Award (LYRCA) booklist for their fall bookclub at the Slidell Branch.  The group of more than 20 third to sixth graders meet once a month to discuss the books and make a book-themed craft.  So far this year, the bookclub has read “The Marvelous Thing that Came from a Spring” by Gilbert Ford about the invention of the slinky, “Word of Mouse” by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein about the adventures of a gifted mouse who escapes from a lab, and “The Bad Guys” by Aaron Blabey about four villains who want to rehab their reputations.

Each year the State Library of Louisiana produces a list of 15 books published the previous year to compete for the LYRCA winner.  Kids from all over the state read the titles and vote on their favorites. The Slidell Middle Grade Bookclub has read LYRCA books and cast votes for the last 3 years.

Anyone interested in joining the Middle Grade Bookclub can contact Ms. Jen at the Slidell Branch.  The next meeting is on Thursday, November 15, at 2:30 p.m. for homeschoolers and 4:30 p.m. for those attending public/private school.
