November 16th is World Bread Day! Have you seen beautiful images and videos of freshly baked breads all over your social media timelines and wonder to yourself “Could I do that?” If you have, we might have some digital and physical materials that will help you achieve just that! The St. Tammany Parish Library page hosts a number of databases for its users, three of which can provide access to recipes of all sorts.
The first database here to help is A to Z Food America! A to Z Food America provides a number of recipes from all over the United States of America. Recipes include a serving size, a list of special diets the item meets, prep, cook, and total time, detailed list of ingredients, and directions. The recipes allow for minor interaction, allowing you to check off ingredients and direction steps as you go. The quickest way to locate a bread recipe is to select the region, state, or ethnic group of your choice and then select the “Breads” option under the “Recipes” menu. There may be some overlap between the region, states, and ethnic groups, but it is a fun way to explore new recipes. Here are three bread recipes found using the database:
https://www.atozfoodamerica.com/louisiana/breads/pistolette-shjn.html
The pistolette, a type of bread roll, was located under the “Breads” option in the state of Louisiana recipes section.
https://www.atozfoodamerica.com/west/breads/banana-bread.html
Banana Bread, a type of sweet loaf bread, was located under the “Breads” option in the Western region recipes section.
https://www.atozfoodamerica.com/scottish/breads/crumpets-7nyf.html
The crumpet, a type of soft, spongy bread, was located under the “Breads” option in the Scottish American ethnic group recipes section.
The next database is A to Z World Food! The A to Z World Food database functions very similarly to A to Z Food America. It also offers serving size, a list of special diets met, prep, cook, and total time, detailed ingredients lists, and directions for each recipe. The quickest way to locate a bread recipe is to select a country of your choice and then select the “Breads” option under the “Recipes” menu. This database allows for you to try international food from your own home! Here are two bread recipes found using the database:
https://www.atozworldfood.com/united-states/breads/popovers-0z2o.html
The popover, a type of bread similar to an English Yorkshire pudding, was located under the “Breads” option in the United States recipes section.
https://www.atozworldfood.com/italy/breads/focaccia.html
Foccacia, a type of flatbread, was located under the “Breads” option in the Italy recipes section.
The third database being mentioned is Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center! Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center is a great source for anyone trying their hand at DIY projects, including baking. The database provides access to various digital materials and resources, including recipes and cookbooks. The recipes are not as uniform as the previously mentioned databases, as they do not all come from the same source or publisher. The quickest way to access a recipe is by selecting the “Cooking and Baking” option under the “Explore Topics” menu on the home page and then selecting the “Baking” option under the Cooking and Baking” menu. After reaching the “Exploring: Baking” page, select “View All Results”, and then you can select any recipe you like! Here is a recipe guide found using this database:

This set of Whole Grain recipes was located under the “Exploring: Baking” all results. The journal article includes multiple bread and baking recipes, including a tomato and olive bread loaf recipe.
Additionally, the library has a number of books all about baking bread at its many different branches. Below is a selection of titles taken from the catalogue:
If you have any questions or need further assistance with the databases, links, and materials listed here, visit your local library branch or contact a reference librarian for further assistance. Happy bread baking!
