The Eisner Awards

Music has the Grammys.  Movies have the Oscars.  Television has the Emmys.  Comics have...?

Every July at San Diego Comic Con, the Eisner Awards are presented to notable additions to the ever-growing collection of published comics and graphic novels.  Our library is lucky enough to have some of these winners on our shelves.  Just like other notable awards, there are various categories within the Eisners.  The titles listed in today's article will have their awards specified below.

Juvenile Collection
Mouse Guard- Best Publication for Kids, 2008; Best Graphic Album (reprint), 2008

A fantasy-adventure that focuses on three mice enforcing safer boarders for their communities.

Little Robot- Best Publication for Early Readers (up to Age 7), 2016
A girl befriends a small robot in the woods and must protect it from larger robots who vie to steal it.

Owly- Best Title for Younger Readers/Best Comics Publication for a Younger Audience, 2006
A collection of wordless stories surrounding a small owl and the lessons he learns.

 

Teen Collection
Chew- Best New Series, 2010; Best Continuing Series, 2011

Detective Tony Chu is a cibopath, someone who can psychically gather information from anything he eats.  This ability is harnessed in a more bizarre fashion once he's recruited into the Special Crimes Division of the FDA.

The Eternal Smile- Best Short Story, 2010
A collection of three short stories involving a fantasy hero in a world that doesn't seem quite right, a greedy frog whose new business scheme involves worshiping an ever-present smile in the sky, and a beleaguered cubicle worker who replies to a Nigerian prince scam e-mail.

Nimona- Best Graphic Album (reprint), 2016
Adapted from Noelle Stevenson's webcomic of the same name.  Notable villain Lord Ballister Blackheart has been fighting against a system that has pitted him against Sir Ambrosious Goldenlion, an old companion.  His latest plans involve a new secret weapon--a shapeshifting sidekick named Nimona, who is all too-eager to execute plans and literally execute people.

 

Adult Collection
Fables- Best Serialized Story, 2003; Best New Series, 2003

The characters from fairytales and folklore have escaped the pages of their books and now live in Fabletown, New York.  When Rose Red is murdered, it's up to Detective Bigby and Snow White to solve the whodunnit and keep their community from coming apart at the seams.

Love Is Love*- Best Anthology, 2017
In response to the 2016 Orlando shooting, this anthology displays and celebrates the different types of love humanity can experience.

Saga*- Best New Series, 2013; Best Continuing Series, 2013-2015, 2017; Best Writer, 2013-14, 2017; Best Painter/ Multimedia Artist, 2014; Best Cover artist 2017
Two soldiers from opposing sides in an intergalactic war are on the run with their newborn daughter in tow.  With a mercenary, a mechanical royal, and many others on their trail, will these two war-worn lovers find a safe place for their growing family?

Tale of Sand- Best Publication Design, 2012
This wordless comic of a man's journey through the desert and the West is inspired by a previously unreleased movie script penned by Jim Henson.
