Celebrating Black History Month

by Jillian Boudreaux, Adult Programming Coordinator

Black History Month began in 1915, but became a nationally recognized observance in 1976.

Programs highlighting two pivotal periods in the history of African Americans will take place this month:

Exploring the Digital Archives of Slavery is a presentation of several research databases for researching the genealogy of slaves and a discussion of the history of slavery in America from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, at the Madisonville Library, 1123 Main Street. This program was originally scheduled as part of the Purchased Lives exhibition that was on display at the Slidell Library, but was rescheduled due to the extreme winter weather event in January.

Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot is a documentary from Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center.  After the film screening, there will be a short guided discussion from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, at the Slidell Library, 555 Robert Blvd.

Refreshments will be served at both of these events.
