Summer Reading Challenge 2021— Tails and Tales — Around the Corner

Registration Opens Friday, May 28, 2021

Beginning  Friday, May 28, 2021 registration opens for the St. Tammany Parish Library’s 2021 Summer Reading Challenge (SRC), Tails and Tales. The challenge is to read (or be read to) for 20 minutes each day or 720 minutes until the Challenge ends on Saturday, August 7, 2021. As you read, use the Beanstack App, from Google Play or the App Store, to track your minutes and earn points. Points translate to opportunities to win prizes! Registration is easy. Here’s how: all ages can visit www.sttammanylibrary.org/tails-and-tales, opens a new window and create your account or an account for your child, or register in-person at any Library branch.

The SRC kicks off with a virtual event that is free and open to all ages. The Kabuki Dancers —a group of performing artists from the Acadiana area of Louisiana who have graced venues all over the nation —will present The Breakdown - A Lesson on Hip Hop History. This program focuses on the history of Hip-Hop and the important figures that pioneered the culture, a dance workshop which the audience can participate in, and it wraps up with dance performance by the Kabuki Dancers. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2021. Register at www.sttammanylibrary.org on the events calendar.

Tails and Tales is peppered with a mix of in-person and virtual programming for every age throughout the summer. For children, look for weekly, in-person, outdoor Storytimes and StoryWalks® in locations throughout the Parish. Virtual programming for children ages 0-11-years-old includes special guests like Johnette Downing —multi-award winning Louisiana musician, singer and author, and presentations from the New Orleans Museum of Art. For teens ages 12-18, virtual programming includes creative writing with local, multi-genre, Indie author Joy E. Rancatore, and  ANIME YOUR WAY — a workshop for budding artists taught by special guest Carlos Nieto III— well-known layout artist for The Simpsons and King of the Hill. Adults will enjoy virtual programming like an interactive retrospective on the History of Blues in America with world-class guitar player, singer and musical artist, Joey Leone, and tips on how to attract and maintain a healthy bird population in your yard from James and Cheryl Pellerin, owners of the Wild Bird Center in Covington. Family virtual events including crafts, games, and fun activities for all ages, will happen every Friday night during the SRC at 6:30 p.m. Download the complete 2021 Summer Reading Challenge Guide here, opens a new window., opens a new window

Patrons ages 0-18-years-old receive a prize upon registration, and all registrants who complete the 720-minute challenge will be entered into drawings for the grand prizes when Tails and Tales ends. Grand prizes include Kindle Fires for children 11 and under; and $50 gift cards — three for teens and one for adults. Weekly drawings will be held through the end of the SRC for the 0-11-year-old group.
