National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month, opens a new window was started by the Academy of American Poets, opens a new window in 1996.  It aims to remind us about the role that poets have in our culture.  Poetry uses language in a different way than everyday speech.  According to World Book, opens a new window, "the basic feature of poetic language is rhythm, opens a new window."  Poetry has three main types: narrative, dramatic, and lyric.  Narrative poetry are epics and ballads.  Dramatic poetry is when plays are written in verse.  Lastly, lyric poetry is the most common type of poetry because it is any short poem.
