Teen Volunteers Become Book Buddies

by Jennifer Rifino, Teen Services Coordinator

The Teen Summer Reading Volunteers at the Causeway, Covington, Madisonville, Mandeville and Slidell Branches are participating in a reading buddy program in which trained volunteers are paired with first through fifth grade children. Book Buddies is a program designed to help your new, struggling or reluctant reader gain confidence as a trained teen or adult volunteer works with them to encourage and support their growing reading skills. Book buddies will:

  • Listen to your child read aloud.
  • Encourage and support reading strategies.
  • Ask your child questions to support reading comprehension.
  • Read to your child to support reading and listening comprehension.

Your child will receive 15 minutes of quality reading time with one of our volunteers through July 13. Interested participants can sign up for a slot in person at the branch or by calling the branch.
