St. Tammany Parish Library 2021 Summer Reading Challenge Going Strong — More Activities on Tap

The St. Tammany Parish Library’s annual Summer Reading Challenge (SRC), Tails & Tales, continues through August 7. The goal of the SRC is to encourage everyone to spend 20 minutes reading every day this summer. The challenges during Tails & Tales give participating patrons of ALL ages the pick of the litter when it comes to “pawesome” summer reads and “fintastic” events and prizes.

“With nearly 2,900 participants we are definitely having a successful Summer Reading Challenge. We hope to see even more people join, enjoy, and participate through this final month,” said Tanya DiMaggio, Assistant Director of Support Services. “We look forward to our last week of programming and the additional challenges our creative and invested Programming Coordinators have lined up for patrons through the end of the Challenge.”

The Summer Reading Challenge kicked off Friday, May 28, 2021 with a mixture of in-person and virtual programming and a community challenge to read 250,000 minutes. Readers have handily surpassed this number and have logged over 607,000 collective minutes to-date. Though programming comes to a close on July 10, participants can still look forward to online activities, challenges, and prizes through August 7th. To register for the SRC as well as the remaining events, visit sttammanylibrary.org. Follow the Tales and Tails logo to register in the Beanstack app and click on the events calendar page to register for events. Challenges for registrants can be found at this link: sttammanylibrary.beanstack.com.

Public libraries offer their communities a constructive way to spend the summer. The Summer Reading Challenge seeks to instill a lifelong love of reading in St. Tammany Parish youth, teens, and adults, and to involve them in rewarding and stimulating activities. Studies have shown that the effects of summer reading programs improve reading comprehension skills between school years.
