Tax Season At Your Library

by Noelle Williams, Reference Services Coordinator

Tax season is in full swing! The IRS started accepting filings on January 27th, and Louisiana tax forms also became available on January 28th. It seems like tax season has started early this year. Are you prepared? If not, your local library has several resources that are freely available to help you get started.

The St. Tammany Parish Library is a partner with MyFreeTaxes, a free income tax preparation program that's available online. MyFreeTaxes allows taxpayers who make less than $66,000 a year to prepare one federal and up to 3 state returns each year. To start filing, go to www.myfreetaxes.com and click get started. Then click the option to file your taxes for free.

The library also offers paper 1040 tax booklets and instructions. These forms are provided to the library by the IRS. Don’t see the form you need? If you know the product number of the form, then a reference librarian may be able to help you print it for free.

Whether you’re ready to file or you’re still getting your paperwork together, your library is ready to help with information about free online and local services that make filing inexpensive and easy. If you would like more information about the tax resources that the library provides, please visit the library’s research information page. You’ll find links for the IRS and Louisiana Revenue office, links to popular tax forms, and information about how you can file for free regardless of your income level. And don’t forget to ask your nearest reference librarian if you need assistance with finding any of this information!
