Jumpstart Your Holiday Season With The Library’s Databases

by Noelle Williams, Reference Services Coordinator

Early November is the perfect time to start getting ready for the holidays. Rethinking your usual holiday menu? Planning on making homemade gifts? Thinking of compiling your family's history? The library has some great online resources to help you get your holiday season started right!

Not the best chef in your family? If you’ve found yourself in charge of this year’s family feast and want to brush up on common cooking techniques, check out A-Z Food America. This resource has videos on all the basic cooking procedures like deglazing a pan, grinding your own spices and making sauces.

If you’re looking to update your holiday recipes for 2020, then RBDigital Magazines is for you. This resource allows you to read your favorite cooking and home magazines on your phone, computer, or tablet. Titles such as Good Housekeeping, Cook’s Country, and Better Homes and Gardens are available with just a few taps on your phone.

Crafty gift ideas are also just a few taps or clicks away! The library’s Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center has articles on a variety of knickknacks that you can make as gifts. You’ll find instructions for quilting blankets, recipes to make fancy chocolates, or a digital book about making your own greeting cards or scrapbooks. All of the materials in the Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center are available for downloading or printing.

Maybe this year you’re planning on compiling your family’s history. If so, the library also has some digital classes to prepare you to take advantage of this time to talk with relatives, collect photos, or prepare to publish that family history book. Gale Courses provides six week online courses that cover the basics of genealogy, how to write your life’s story, and how to take striking photographs of people. While the classes are free, you will have to register. The next set of courses will begin November 11th.

All of these resources are free and available 24/7 from home with your library card. Have questions? Feel free to reach out to a reference librarian for help. Let the holiday season begin!
