St. Tammany Parish Library Gears up for Third Annual TeenTober Celebration

St. Tammany Parish Library (STPL) is gearing up to celebrate our third annual TeenTober — a nationwide celebration throughout the month of October started in 2019, to celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services at your local library, highlight available resources and activities, and most of all encourage teens to read for enjoyment.

This month-long event is spearheaded by the Teen Services Department. This Department offers innovative and creative services for teens year-round to help them learn new skills, and to fuel their passions both inside and outside the library.

“It is a time to celebrate reading for fun while encouraging teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms —books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks and more,” said Jennifer Rifino, Teen Services Coordinator.

As part of TeenTober, STPL is offering Teen Amnesty Month to ensure all teens have access to the services and items the library has to offer. Throughout the month of October, replacement library card fees are waived for teens ages 12-18. If you’ve lost your card, now’s the time to replace it. In addition, overdue book fines for items checked out on teens’ cards are waived as well.

Here’s a glimpse at what fun to expect for TeenTober 2021.

Books & Writing: Sign up for the free monthly Teen Book Tote Subscription Service at Choose your theme. In addition, submit your essay for one of the included writing prompts, and we’ll publish it on our Teen page!

Science/STREAM/Gaming: Registration is now open for popular Among Us and Pokemon Showdown gaming events.  Learn the science in making ice cream in our STREAM (Science/Technology/READING/Art/Math) “I Scream” workshops.

Arts & Crafting: Join our friendly teen librarians for October-themed DIY Crafternoons throughout the month. Check the online calendar for dates and locations.

Library Services and Fun: Your teen librarians at the Slidell and Covington branches will help you learn about terrific services like HomeworkLA offering free online tutoring, and downloadable book apps.  Teens and their families are invited to our after-hours Interactive Hocus-Pocus Movie Spectacular, Saturday, October 23 6:30 p.m. at the Slidell Branch located at 555 Robert Boulevard.
