Season of the Witch

It's time once again for comics and graphic novels perfect for October's spooky atmosphere.  In the past few years, I've given a mixed list of different books that would suit the mood, and this year I want to focus on one of the month's iconic archetypes--The Witch.

Whether her spells and craft are to help or harm others, the witch is a being to fear, revere, and sometimes steer clear from.  Classic depictions have her astride a broom with a black cat companion, but more modern takes focus on the inherent power she has from shirking expectation and embracing her independence.  Witches have been written to be good, evil, or something in-between, and this collection of books covers all corners.  Let's dig in!

In our juvenile collection:

Beetle & the Hollowbones
Beetle is a goblin training under her grandmother to become a witch.  Her best friend Blob Ghost is tethered to the local mall and doesn't know why.  Her old friend Kat Hollowbones is back in town with her aunt to expand her own magical education.  The three need to band together to solve Blob's mystery and save the mall before its scheduled demolition!

Jim Henson's Storyteller: Witches
Inspired from the show of the same name, this collection of comics retells international fairy and folk tales revolving around witches.

Paranorthern and the Chaos Bunny A-hop-calypse
Abby accidentally summoned a portal of chaos rabbits, and the mischievous critters will stop at nothing to wreck havoc in her dimension.  Will she be able to control her magic to send the warren back, or is there something else pulling the strings on this disaster?

Snapdragon
When Snap asks the local "witch" Jacks to help care for a litter of opossum joeys, she ends up learning more about the reclusive old woman and the mysterious ties she has to Snap's family.

The Witch Boy
Aster's family is split into two factions--the spellcasting women and girls and the shapeshifting men and boys.  Deviation from these paths leads to exile, so Aster must keep his magic a secret.  But when a mysterious creature starts kidnapping the other boys, he'll have to reveal his talents to save his family.

In our young adult collection:

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Vol. 1
The classic Archie character gets a horror re-imagining!  On the eve of her sixteenth birthday, Sabrina Spellman must choose between a mortal life or manifesting her powers.  Her decision might be made for her when an enemy of the family has her own sinister plans...

Mooncakes
A bookish witch and vagabond werewolf work together to fight against a demon plaguing their woods.

Witchy
In the magical kingdom of Hyalin, a spellcasters' magical ability is determined by the length of their hair.  However, a careful balance must be kept lest they're deemed too powerful and executed as an enemy of the state.  Nyneve's father was a victim of such tragedy, and she must decide if she will serve the kingdom who killed him or remain true to her own convictions.

In our general collection:

The Daughters of Salem, Vol. 1
A fictionalized telling of the Salem Witch Trials focusing on the mass hysteria and fear that came from the false accusations and discrimination of the Puritan community.  Due to the content of this book, reader's discretion is strongly advised.

The Witches
An adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic, The Witches tells of a boy and his grandmother banding together to thwart the diabolical plan of their country's coven.  Otherwise, all the children of Britain will be turned into mice!
