Reading Buddies

by Jennifer Rifino, Teen Services Coordinator

Reading Buddies is a new summer reading program that pairs teenage volunteers with 1st through 5th grade students who are learning to read.

The program helps boost young readers' skills and get them excited about reading and the library. It gives Big Buddies volunteer service hours and the chance to make a real difference in a child's life.

Who are the Big Buddies?

Big Buddies are teen volunteers entering grades 8-12 who are volunteering for the 2018 Libraries ROCK! Summer Reading Challenge, who specifically wish to partner with a little buddy to read together for 20 minutes.

Big Buddies are NOT tutors—their job is to help Little Buddies enjoy reading, not to help them with homework or correct learning issues.

Who are the Little Buddies?

Little Buddies are elementary school students in grades 1 through 5 who want extra help with reading with a teen mentor.

How do I sign up?

The Reading Buddies program will start June 18th and will run through the end of July. Children may sign up for a 30-minute slot at the Causeway, Covington, Madisonville, Mandeville, Slidell and South Slidell branches starting June 11th.  Reading Buddies shifts will vary by branch, and registration will open one week prior.

Little Buddies may bring a book of their own or select a book with their Big Buddy from a preselected list determined by the Children’s Librarian.

Please note that parents of Little Buddies who are younger than 9 are to remain in the library in accordance to the Unattended Child Policy.
