October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

If you’re thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, a great way to do it is to adopt a pet from your local animal shelter. Many wonderful dogs are in need of a home, and the ASPCA has named October as the official Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Aside from gaining a loyal and loving member of the family, there are plenty of reasons to adopt from a shelter. Shelter dogs cost less, many are house-trained, and you can adopt both puppies and adult dogs. Probably the most important reason is that you’re saving a life. Not sure that you’re ready for such a big commitment? Consider fostering a dog until he or she finds their forever home. Adopting a dog is a big responsibility. If you and your family feel ready to adopt though, you will have a grateful and loving addition to your household!

These are some of the Animal Shelters in the St. Tammany area:

  • Slidell Animal Control
  • Tammany Parish Animal Services
  • Pearl River County SPCA
  • Northshore Humane Society
  • Your local PetSmart (PetSmart holds weekly adoption events)
